This market will resolve according to the date (Berlin time) when the water level at the Kaub gauge (station 25700100) on the Rhine River first reaches or exceeds 77 centimeters, as reported by the German Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV) via PegelOnline. A reading of 77 centimeters or higher is the equivalent water level (Gleichwertiger Wasserstand, GlW) for Kaub, the low-water reference mark below which shipping becomes structurally disrupted, and defines "normal levels" for this market. The resolution is triggered by the first reading at or above 77 centimeters recorded on or after the market's start, representing a rise back to the threshold. A single reading at or above 77 centimeters is sufficient to trigger resolution; transient spikes count, and the water level does not need to be sustained at or above 77 centimeters for any period. If readings for timestamps on or after November 1, 2026 (Berlin time) are available on the resolution source, and no reading at or above 77 centimeters has been recorded for a timestamp before November 1, 2026 (Berlin time), this market will resolve to "No return before November 1, 2026." If readings for timestamps on or after November 1, 2026 (Berlin time) have not been recorded on the resolution source by November 2, 2026, 11:59 PM Berlin time, and no reading at or above 77 centimeters has been recorded for a timestamp before November 1, 2026 (Berlin time), this market will resolve to "No return before November 1, 2026." The resolution source for this market will be PegelOnline (https://www.pegelonline.wsv.de/gast/stammdaten?pegelnr=25700100).

Currently, it's difficult to directly compare prediction market odds to specific analyst forecasts for the Rhine River’s recovery. However, this market provides a real-time aggregate of diverse perspectives, reflecting the collective wisdom of traders. Traditional forecasts often rely on hydrological models and historical data, while this market incorporates a broader range of information, including potential interventions and unforeseen events. Discrepancies between this market and expert opinions could signal differing beliefs about the likelihood of various scenarios influencing river levels.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of the Rhine River returning to normal levels by the resolution date. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market price adjusts dynamically based on supply and demand, meaning increased buying pressure will raise the price, indicating growing confidence in a timely recovery, and vice versa. This creates a constantly updated forecast based on the aggregated insights of all participants.
This market resolves around Nov 1, 2026, with the outcome confirmed once the event is verifiable from credible public reporting. Specifically, resolution will depend on whether the Rhine River has returned to its normal navigable levels, as determined by official measurements from relevant authorities. The exact definition of ‘normal levels’ will be based on publicly available data and established benchmarks for commercial shipping. Traders will be able to see the final outcome and settlement details on Polymarket following the resolution date.
Several factors could significantly impact this market. Major rainfall events or prolonged droughts in the Rhine River basin would be key catalysts. Changes in snowmelt patterns in the Alps, which feed the river, could also shift expectations. Furthermore, any announcements regarding water management strategies, such as releases from reservoirs or restrictions on shipping, could influence trading activity. Unexpected geopolitical events impacting trade routes or industrial activity along the Rhine could also move the market, as these would affect demand for river transport.
