This event tracks the timing of Big Sky Ski Resort's official opening for the 2026-27 winter season, focusing on when the resort begins full seasonal operations for the public. It measures whether the resort will open its lifts and designated terrain for season pass holders before specific dates throughout the fall and early winter.
The event determines whether Big Sky Ski Resort initiates Seasonal Opening Operations during the 2026-27 winter season before specified dates ranging from November 15, 2026, to December 13, 2026. Seasonal Opening Operations are defined as the first calendar day on which at least one passenger lift transports members of the general public uphill for downhill skiing or snowboarding on terrain officially designated for that purpose. Only days when valid season pass holders can access these lifts and terrain without additional purchase count, including free reservations and passholder-only days. Excluded are employee, contractor, media, private-event, early-access, preview days, as well as scenic rides, mountain biking, hiking, tubing, and uphill-only access. The opening day is determined in Eastern Time, and scheduled or announced dates do not count. If the resort undergoes a change in name, branding, ownership, operator, or website, its geographic identity remains unchanged for resolution purposes. Should no Source Agency document Seasonal Opening Operations by the market's expiration and insufficient information exist to confirm occurrence, the market resolves to the last fair price as determined by the Exchange. If Big Sky Ski Resort is decommissioned before the market expires, the market resolves to No.
Currently, prediction market odds reflect a collective forecast based on the wisdom of the crowd. Compared to traditional analyst forecasts for ski resort opening dates, this market offers a dynamic view that adjusts in real-time as new information becomes available. While analysts may rely on historical data and seasonal trends, this market incorporates a broader range of factors, including weather patterns, snow conditions, and even anecdotal reports from those familiar with the area. It’s a different way to gauge expectations for when Big Sky will open for the season.
On Kalshi, this market is priced using a continuous double auction. Traders buy and sell contracts representing different opening dates, and the price of each contract reflects the probability of that date being the actual opening day. As more traders buy a contract, its price increases, indicating a higher perceived probability. On Kalshi, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market depth and order book are visible on the dashboard, allowing you to see the current bids and asks for each possible outcome. This dynamic pricing mechanism allows the market to quickly incorporate new information and adjust probabilities accordingly.
This market resolves around Jan 3, 2027, with the outcome confirmed once the official opening date of Big Sky for the 26/27 winter season is verifiable from credible public reporting. The date announced by Big Sky Resort will be the determining factor. The market will settle to 100 for the correct date and 0 for all other dates. Traders should monitor official announcements from the resort as the expected opening time approaches to understand when the outcome will be known and the market will close.
Several factors could significantly influence this market. Early-season snowfall in the Big Sky area is a major driver, with substantial storms likely to push the opening date forward and increase the probability of earlier dates. Conversely, warmer temperatures or a lack of snow could delay the opening, shifting probability towards later dates. Official announcements from Big Sky Resort regarding snowmaking progress or anticipated opening timelines will also be key signals. Finally, long-range weather forecasts and reports from ski industry analysts could also impact trading activity in this market.
