Resolves Dec 1, 2026

This market will resolve according to the lowest daily mean gage height (river level), in feet, recorded at the Mississippi River at Baton Rouge, LA streamgage (USGS site 07374000) between market creation and November 30, 2026, as published by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) for parameter code 00065 under statistic code 00003 (daily mean). The lowest daily reading in the window decides this market; the level does not need to be sustained. If USGS does not publish a reading for one or more days, this market will resolve according to the lowest reading among the days that are published. USGS reports gage height to 2 decimal places, and this is the precision used to resolve this market. Each range includes both of its stated bounds and consecutive ranges are contiguous, so every reading falls in exactly one range: a lowest reading of exactly 4.00 ft resolves the range beginning at 4.00 ft to "Yes" and every other range to "No". The resolution source is the USGS Daily Values service for site 07374000, available here: https://waterservices.usgs.gov/nwis/dv/?sites=07374000¶meterCd=00065&statCd=00003&startDT=2026-09-21&endDT=2026-11-30&format=rdb This market will resolve on the values published at the time of resolution, whether flagged provisional ("P") or approved ("A"); revisions published afterward will not be considered. If the source is unavailable, this market may be extended to December 15, 2026, 11:59 PM ET. If no data for the window is available by then, this market will resolve to "Below 3.00 ft".

Currently, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than many traditional analyst forecasts regarding the Mississippi River level. While some analysts predict near-normal water levels due to recent rainfall, this market suggests a higher probability of lower levels. It's important to remember that analyst forecasts often rely on complex hydrological models, whereas this market represents the collective judgment of a diverse group of traders. This difference highlights the potential value of prediction markets in incorporating a wider range of information and perspectives than traditional forecasting methods.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief about the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price fluctuates based on supply and demand; if more people believe the river level will be low, the price of shares representing that outcome will increase, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the latest information and collective intelligence.
This market resolves around Dec 2, 2026, with the outcome confirmed once the event is verifiable from credible public reporting. Specifically, the official gauge height reading at the Baton Rouge station, as reported by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, will be used to determine whether the river level falls below the specified threshold. The market will settle based on this publicly available data, providing a transparent and objective resolution process. Traders should monitor official sources as the resolution date approaches to stay informed.
Several factors could significantly influence this market between now and Dec 2, 2026. Major weather events, such as prolonged droughts or unusually heavy rainfall in the Mississippi River basin, would be key catalysts. Reports from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers regarding water management strategies and river flow projections will also be closely watched. Unexpected disruptions to navigation or industrial activity along the river could also shift sentiment. Any news impacting agricultural forecasts for the region, as these influence water demand, could also move this market.
