Resolves Dec 2, 2026
$
During 2026, the Atlantic hurricane season will produce major hurricanes that meet or exceed Category 3 intensity as monitored by the National Hurricane Center.
Resolution is based on the count of major Atlantic hurricanes (Category 3 or above) recorded by NOAA's National Hurricane Center between January 1, 2026 and December 1, 2026. The market resolves Yes if the total exceeds any of the specified thresholds: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 major hurricanes. Each threshold represents a separate resolution condition, with higher thresholds indicating more severe hurricane seasons. The market expires at the sooner of the event occurrence or one day after December 1, 2026.
Currently, prediction markets often offer a different perspective than traditional forecasts. While many analysts issue seasonal hurricane predictions, this market allows traders to collectively forecast the outcome based on their own assessment of available information. It’s common to find that prediction market probabilities diverge from initial expert forecasts, especially as new data emerges. This is because the market incorporates a wide range of factors and continuously updates its assessment, potentially revealing insights that pre-season predictions might miss. Comparing this market to those forecasts can be a useful exercise in understanding different perspectives on the potential severity of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season.
On Kalshi, this market is priced using a continuous double auction. Traders buy and sell contracts representing each possible outcome – in this case, different numbers of major Atlantic hurricanes. The price of each contract reflects the market’s collective probability of that outcome occurring. On Kalshi, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the prices adjust, providing a real-time assessment of the likelihood of various scenarios. The current prices demonstrate the aggregated wisdom of the crowd regarding the potential intensity of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season.
This market resolves around Dec 2, 2026, with the outcome confirmed once the event is verifiable from credible public reporting. The number of major Atlantic hurricanes during the 2026 season, as officially reported by the National Hurricane Center (NHC), will determine the outcome. A 'major' hurricane is defined as a hurricane reaching Category 3 or higher on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. The resolution will be based on the official NHC data, ensuring a transparent and verifiable result for this market.
Several factors could significantly impact this market between now and resolution. Early seasonal forecasts released by organizations like NOAA and Colorado State University will likely influence trading activity. The development of El Niño or La Niña conditions in the Pacific Ocean, which have a known impact on Atlantic hurricane activity, will be closely watched. Individual hurricane formations and their intensity during the 2026 season will be major catalysts, causing prices to shift as the likelihood of different outcomes changes. Any significant changes in sea surface temperatures or atmospheric patterns could also move this market.
