This market tracks Illinois' nuclear power output in 2026, focusing on whether generation surpasses specific thresholds. The outcome depends on official energy reports, reflecting the state's reliance on nuclear facilities for electricity. Higher thresholds represent increasingly ambitious targets for nuclear production.
All markets resolve based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) first official publication of Illinois’ total utility-scale net nuclear electricity generation for the full calendar year 2026, measured in terawatt-hours (TWh). The underlying data originates from EIA reports originally published in megawatthours (MWh), with conversions applied (1 TWh = 1,000,000 MWh). Only generation from nuclear facilities physically located within Illinois boundaries is counted. Once the EIA releases complete January–December 2026 data, all markets resolve simultaneously according to their respective thresholds—92.5 TWh, 95.0 TWh, 97.5 TWh, or 100.0 TWh—and any later revisions to the data do not alter the resolution outcome. Each market resolves to "Yes" if the reported figure exceeds its defined threshold; otherwise, it resolves to "No".
Compared to analyst forecasts, this market often reflects a more nuanced view shaped by real-time trading activity. While analysts may issue periodic reports, traders adjust positions daily based on new data, regulatory updates, and energy demand trends. This can lead to divergence, especially when unexpected policy shifts or plant announcements occur.
On Kalshi, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. On Kalshi, traders set prices through a continuous auction where buyers and sellers agree on the probability of each outcome. The current top outcome is priced at 96.0%, with liquidity indicated by a volume of $275,069. Prices adjust dynamically to reflect new information and trader sentiment.
This market resolves around Mar 7, 2027, with the outcome confirmed once the event is verifiable from credible public reporting. The final settlement reflects the actual percentage of Illinois’s electricity generated by nuclear sources in 2026, based on authoritative energy data releases. Timing aligns with official energy statistics, typically published early the following year, ensuring a clear and objective resolution point for all contracts.
Key signals include federal or state policy changes affecting nuclear plant operations, shifts in energy demand due to weather patterns, advancements in alternative energy sources, and unexpected plant outages or restarts. Economic factors such as fuel cost fluctuations and regulatory rulings also influence trader sentiment. Media coverage of plant safety reviews or legislative debates can cause rapid price swings, while quarterly energy reports provide concrete data points that often trigger reevaluations of market probabilities.
