Intro

This market tracks whether there will be zero, one, or more volcanic eruptions with a Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) of 4 or higher anywhere in the world during the year 2026. Currently, Polymarket gives a 48.0% probability to the outcome of exactly zero confirmed VEI 4 or higher eruptions, while the probability of exactly one such eruption is 47.0%. Resolution will be based on data from the Smithsonian Institution Global Volcanism Program, specifically the cumulative figures for 2026 released on their website. Keep an eye on volcanic activity around January 1, 2027, as that is when the Smithsonian Institution will begin releasing the data that will ultimately resolve this market.

Polymarket

This market will resolve according to the number of natural volcanic eruptions with a Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) of 4 or higher between January 1 and December 31, 2026, 11:59 PM ET. The primary resolution source will be the Smithsonian Institution Global Volcanism Program (GVP: https://volcano.si.edu/), specifically the cumulative figures for 2026 for VEI 4, VEI 5, and VEI 6 released on the page currently titled "Eruptions Avg 2000-2024 (N/T)" (https://volcano.si.edu/faq/index.cfm?question=eruptionsbyyear) as of March 31, 2027, 12 PM ET. Any prior updates will not be considered finalized. If this dataset has not been updated to include all relevant events by March 31, 2027, or if the Smithsonian GVP becomes permanently unavailable, this market may resolve based on a consensus of credible scientific sources, including the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), national or regional volcanic observatories, or credible reporting of a scientific consensus. Note: Smithsonian Institution Global Volcanism Program databases, which include eruptions that reached the relevant threshold prior to this market’s timeframe (e.g., https://volcano.si.edu/faq/index.cfm?question=eruptionsbyyear&checkyear=2025), will not be considered.

Frequently asked questions

On Polymarket, the dashboard for the 2026 volcano eruption market tracks the current odds, price history, and 24-hour trading volume. Currently, the total volume for this market is $1,167,856, with $5 traded in the last 24 hours. The dashboard visualizes how traders are pricing the probability of different numbers of VEI 4 or higher volcanic eruptions occurring in 2026. This allows participants to quickly assess market sentiment and identify potential trading opportunities related to geological activity.

Currently, the prevailing sentiment in this market suggests a roughly 50% chance of zero confirmed VEI 4 or higher volcanic eruptions in 2026. This contrasts with expert geological forecasts, which generally indicate a consistent, though relatively low, annual probability of such events occurring. While analysts often provide ranges based on historical data and monitoring, this market aggregates a wider range of perspectives and allows for real-time adjustments based on new information or shifts in perceived risk. It’s important to remember that prediction market outcomes are driven by collective intelligence, while analyst forecasts represent individual assessments.

On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where participants buy and sell shares representing their belief in different outcomes. The price of each share reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As traders exchange shares, the prices adjust to reflect the collective wisdom of the crowd. Currently, the most actively traded outcome is the possibility of zero large eruptions, indicating a significant portion of traders believe volcanic activity will remain relatively quiet in 2026. The market’s price discovery process incorporates diverse opinions and potential catalysts.

This market resolves around Apr 1, 2027, with the outcome confirmed once the event is verifiable from credible public reporting. The number of large volcano eruptions (VEI ≥4) occurring throughout the calendar year 2026 will be assessed based on data from established geological monitoring agencies. Any confirmed eruptions meeting the VEI criteria will be counted towards the final outcome of this market. The resolution will rely on publicly available data and established scientific standards for classifying volcanic events.

Several signals could significantly impact this market. Increased seismic activity at known volcanic hotspots, particularly those with a history of large eruptions, would likely shift the odds towards a higher number of events. Conversely, reports indicating a decrease in magma pressure or cooling temperatures at active volcanoes could lower the perceived risk. Major geological surveys releasing updated risk assessments, or unexpected volcanic activity in previously dormant regions, could also cause substantial price movements. Monitoring these developments will be key to understanding the evolving probabilities within this market.
