This market will resolve to "Yes" if a natural meteoroid (bolide) explodes in Earth's atmosphere with a total impact energy greater than or equal to 5 kilotons of TNT equivalent between January 1 and December 31, 2026, 11:59 PM ET. Otherwise, this market will resolve to “No”. The object must be classified as a natural meteoroid; events involving artificial objects or reentry vehicles do not qualify. The primary resolution source will be the NASA JPL Fireball and Bolide Data repository: https://cneos.jpl.nasa.gov/fireballs/. The relevant field for determining impact energy is the “Impact Energy (kt)” column. If this dataset has not been updated to include all relevant dates by February 28, 2027, or if the NASA JPL Fireball and Bolide Data repository becomes permanently unavailable, this market may resolve based on a consensus of credible sources including the European Space Agency (ESA), the International Asteroid Warning Network (IAWN), the U.S. Department of Defense, or credible reporting of a scientific consensus, such as a NASA press release.

Currently, the prevailing sentiment in this market suggests a relatively low probability of a 5kt meteor strike in 2026. This contrasts with some expert analyses, which suggest that while a strike of this magnitude is unlikely in any given year, the possibility is not negligible given the constant influx of space debris. However, it's important to note that analyst forecasts often rely on complex models and assumptions, while this market reflects the collective judgment of a diverse group of traders. The current implied probability differs from many public estimates, indicating a unique perspective offered by this market.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief about the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of a 5kt meteor strike occurring in 2026. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information emerges, the price adjusts accordingly, providing a dynamic assessment of risk. The current implied probability, as reflected by the share price, is 17.0%.
This market resolves around Mar 1, 2027, with the outcome determined by whether a meteor with a kinetic energy equivalent to or exceeding 5 kilotons of TNT impacts Earth during the calendar year 2026. The outcome will be verified against credible public reporting from established scientific organizations and governmental agencies responsible for tracking near-Earth objects. Any impact event will be assessed based on publicly available data regarding the meteor's size, velocity, and impact location to determine if it meets the 5kt threshold.
Several signals or events could significantly impact this market. A confirmed near-miss by a large asteroid, or the discovery of a previously unknown potentially hazardous object on a collision course with Earth, would likely increase trading volume and shift the odds. Conversely, successful asteroid deflection tests or improved tracking capabilities demonstrating a more comprehensive understanding of near-Earth objects could lower the perceived risk. Major scientific publications detailing the frequency of impact events or updates from space agencies like NASA could also influence trader sentiment and move this market.
